Starting with how a healthy cell functions and progressing through how dysfunction develops, the course builds a complete biological framework, week by week, so that understanding compounds rather than accumulates.

It is the foundational layer of the CHL curriculum designed to build the biological reasoning that makes the health information you already encounter more interpretable. Teaching the biology of how each system works before examining how it breaks down, and how it breaks down before introducing the lab markers that reflect it. One longitudinal case study runs through all 12 weeks, giving participants a consistent practice ground for biological reasoning and a window into how the framework applies to the kinds of health patterns they encounter in their own work and lives.
Health is the ongoing function of cellular processes. We introduce the four-domain framework — Structure, Energy, Communication, and Repair — establishing how they operate as sequential and cyclical stages in everything the cell does continuously.
Structure and function are inseparable. We trace the physical architecture of the cell, from the plasma membrane to the mitochondria, and establish why structural integrity is a prerequisite for all other cellular functions.
Structural integrity erodes gradually. We examine what happens when membranes lose their selective integrity and the cytoskeleton loses its organizational coherence, and introduce the first foundational lab markers.
The cell runs on ATP. We trace how mitochondria convert multiple fuel sources (glucose, fatty acids, ketones) into usable energy, and why the ability to shift fluidly between those sources is the baseline of a healthy energy system.
Metabolism is not a fixed capacity. We explore what happens when energy demands outpace the system's ability to meet them, and how that strain accumulates downstream across the liver, kidneys, and beyond.
Cells do not act in isolation. We trace how cells send, receive, and respond to signals like hormones, nutrients, and stress molecules to coordinate metabolism, inflammation, and repair across the entire body.
Signaling systems are designed to self-correct. We examine what happens when feedback loops lose calibration — and how dysregulated signals propagate through the body, driving dysfunction across multiple domains simultaneously.
Cellular damage is a normal byproduct of cellular activity. We introduce the cell's built-in cleanup mechanisms of autophagy and mitophagy and establish why the balance between damage accumulation and repair capacity is what determines long-term cellular resilience.
As metabolic load increases and repair capacity naturally declines, the gap between damage and the system's ability to manage it widens. We examine oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and the self-reinforcing loop that results.
The four domains are not separate topics: They are four lenses trained on the same system. We bring the complete framework together, tracing how structural decline drives energy strain, which distorts communication, overloads repair, and starts the cycle over again.
We close by returning to the case study with the full framework in place — synthesizing twelve weeks of reasoning into a complete biological picture, and reflecting on what that framework means for the work and questions participants carry outside the course.
